Celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025: Advancing Digital Gender Equality

At QurateHQ, we proudly join the global community in recognizing World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) on May 17, 2025. This day commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on May 17, 1865, and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in shaping societies and economies. WTISD was first celebrated in 1969 as World Telecommunication Day, marking the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the ITU. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 17 as World Information Society Day to highlight the importance of ICTs in achieving a people-centered, inclusive, and development-oriented information society. In 2006, both observances were merged to form World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrated annually on May 17. (freetimelearning.com, Time and Date, ITU

The theme for WTISD 2025 is “Digital Gender Equality: Empowering Women and Girls in the Digital Transformation.” This theme underscores the urgent need to bridge the digital gender divide and ensure that women and girls worldwide can access, use, and benefit from digital technologies.

Despite global progress, significant disparities persist. As of 2024, 70% of men use the internet compared to 65% of women. In least developed countries, the gender gap is even more pronounced, with women 21% less likely to be online than men. (United Nations, ITU

This year’s observance coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, a landmark agreement aimed at advancing gender equality. The Beijing+30 Action Agenda calls for accelerated efforts to bridge the digital gender gap, emphasizing the need for policies and initiatives that promote women’s participation in the digital economy.
